Time Travelling The World for Child Refugees
In June 2020 Ola & Seamus are officially resigning as adults and time travelling back to childhood, taking on 2,000 km of adventure challenges around the world.
On this time travelling quest they will pedal, canoe, skip and tuk-tuk across 4 continents, raising awareness of the crisis affecting refugee children who have been forcibly displaced due to war and persecution.
"IF YOU WANT REAL PEACE IN THE WORLD, START WITH CHILDREN."
- GANDHI -
By travelling the world and taking on challenges as children, they're spreading a simple message - that childhood matters. It's a time where you should feel safe, play, learn and discover.
If we think back to when we were young, we may remember bedtime stories, birthday parties, paddling in the sea or learning to ride a bike. Sadly, not all children have the opportunity to experience a safe childhood surrounded by loved ones.
Children make up more than half of the world's refugees, and unaccompanied children are among the 19,000 who have died crossing the Mediterranean, considered the most dangerous migration route in the world. Those that make it to camp endure conditions so horrific, they risk developing severe psychological trauma. Cases of self-harm and suicide have been reported in children as young as two.
With nearly 70.8 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, UN statistics show that we are witnessing the highest levels of human displacement ever recorded.
BEHIND EVERY HEADLINE & STATISTIC IS A HUMAN STORY.
A HUMAN BEING.
We're raising money for the grassroots charity Help Refugees. They deliver fast, humanitarian aid and vital services to those affected by the global refugee crisis, funding projects in refugee camps throughout Europe and The Middle East.
They find the local organisations doing the most effective work and give them what they need to help people – whether that’s funding, material aid (food, clothing, shelter) or volunteers. Projects such as Refugee Trauma, who provide mental health care and support for children suffering acute trauma, and Refugee Rescue UK who work tirelessly at sea and on land to ensure the safety of people making the dangerous migration crossings.
When we looked beyond the headlines and the statistics, we saw people just like us. Parents, children, young and old, teachers, students, artists, doctors, dreamers. Behind every headline is a human story. A human being. A child.
WE BELIEVE THAT REAL LOVE, COMPASSION AND SOLIDARITY DON'T STOP AT BORDERS.
We’re CHOOSING LOVE, embracing our inner child and giving our bodies a bit of a grilling in the process!
Our 8-month adventure is entirely self-funded, so all money raised goes directly to the charity.
All donations are received in real-time via the charities own fundraising page, enabling them to spend the funds to ensure children and families have what they need, at the time that they need it.
If you’d like to donate to the charity, just click through to our fundraising page, and together we can help ensure a better future for our children.
Ola & Seamus
We will begin our journey in the UK, before moving onto Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. Challenges include a bumpy 5-day 400 km bike ride from Mount Kilimanjaro to the Serengeti, a solo 100 km village-to-village 'SUPERHERO' hike through the Himalayas and a 900 km Rickshaw run in the Southern Indian State of Tamil Nadu.
The expedition will end with a fun scooter race, mass bike ride and community ice cream race!
To keep the momentum going in between bigger challenges, we’ll be adopting a ‘Mario Land’ style gaming approach, in which the completion of mini challenges is rewarded with STARS (aka Kaboodles). Mini challenges include playing games with local kids, building sandcastles, counting stars and eating local treats.
For every 1,000 Kaboodle Stars earned, we will choose one other charity or conservation project to support in the future.
WANT TO GET INVOLVED?
The more people involved, the more fun the adventure! In the chart below you’ll see a list of dates and locations of where we will be, and the challenges we’ll be undertaking.
Follow us on our quest and become an honorary Time Traveller! If you’re interested in joining us, you can send us an email or contact us on Facebook.
